Waiting is made of over 1,100 letters. It is an entire poem, “On Wakening” by Norma Desprez. Each letter of the poem is cast individually out of sugar, using a Day of the Dead sugar skull recipe. The words “I am Ready” are the negative images of the letters, created with loose sugar. The piece was made during a collaboration with Norma and serves to facilitate communication with her deceased husband. Normas passed before the collaboration was publicly presented and so the piece serves as her memorial, as well.

String of Sins is comprised of 273 sins that I have committed. The sins were embroidered, in penance, onto an heirloom shirt that is too small for me.
Sins for Strings (not pictured) utilizes all of the embroidered sin text and drops out the non-musical letters (h-z). I assigned a system to the remaining letters (a-g) and their naturally occurring groupings from the original text. I uniformly applied the devised system to write music (with the notes and groupings corresponding to letters and spaces from the text, in their original order).

Cupid’s Nasty Arrows is about taking lovers. It is a grouping of hand sewn, doll like figures made out of a set of my worn bed sheets. Viewers often comment upon it as reflecting a lone male with a pile of used females, but the figures are not gender specific. The piece was intended to reflect one in the same, thus all were cut from the same cloth. The lone figure contains a bit of hope as it is unsullied as of yet, with love (hearts) for eyes. It is displayed on the floor, as polite society “looks down” on taking lovers. The work will become a dirtier affair as time passes, collecting the detritus left over by others, from the floors on which it is displayed. Without realizing, the viewer has contributed to making the piece considerably less clean than the freshly washed, but well used, bed sheets it was made from.

Alphabet: A Love Story is an invented text, in riddle form, published in a paid ad in the Eau Claire Leader Telegram. The ad ran for 7 days. Each day, the newspaper was purchased, the ad circled and cut out, and then framed. The newspaper would not allow the ad to be published in the Obituary section, as originally requested. I took odd calls from it and kept a small call log of responses to the notices. The notice marks an admitted ending to a long term love affair.

Treatise Concerning the Nature of Faithfulness is a text that I wrote, somewhat serious and rather humorous, about being able to tell the degree of faithfulness of a love partner. The text was fashioned after my divorce decree, legal lingo, romantic touchstones, and songs by The Cure. It gives specific instruction on what to do with the “Faithful” or the “Unfaithful”. It is worn around my neck as a tiny, devotional book. Viewers must ask me to see it when I wear it for exhibition. I must remove it, and in a gesture of intimacy and trust, pass it to them to read. When my presence was not possible, I cocooned the book in a hollow, in a box, in the gallery wall. Viewers could reach inside to remove and read it. But, to get to the book, they had to walk “through” the entire text of the treatise, which was spilled out onto the floor, windows and wall of the gallery. With the intimacy of communication and physically passing the book from me to the viewer gone, I wanted to cause the viewer discomfort for viewing the treatise voyeuristically. The piece was painted over at the end of the exhibition, the hole in the wall patched.

Love Walked In examines non-verbal communication as the sole determinant of a potential intimate relationship. In this work, I pretend to be a scientist, trying to determine, in cold hard facts, how to pinpoint a potential love interest using only nonverbal gestures. The data was collected through actual observations in pre-specified locations as determined by the Data Collection Books and the criteria for observation that they each contain. A theatre performer (Aaron Zook) and I spied on people and noted their interactions into the books for 9 months. The 17 Data Collection Books are modeled after practice script books that Aaron used in his profession. The raw observation data was then compiled and mathematically ranked based upon frequency of occurrence. The top 10 frequently occurring behaviors of the separated Male and Female data was turned into a series of “facts” and generalized statements which make up the Portrait: He and Portrait: She. The portraits provide the viewer with a way to recognize when Love potentially walks into their life.
The written summary of the compiled data makes up the Official Reporting of Findings. Research Phase I. Physical Manifestations of Love Affliction: As Documented Through an Analysis of Nonverbal Symptomatic Communication. I present the written report, while dressed as an official Scientist, in a very monotone, 12 ½ minute live performance. For times when I am unable to perform live, the performance is shown on a DVD.
The final installation is the raw data in a glass case, the Portraits hung up, a red 78rpm record of “Love Walked In” by George and Ira Gershwin, a Proximity Approximation Device, the Official Report of Findings out for viewers to read, and the DVD playing or myself performing live.
