      <image:title>Cupid's Nasty Arrows - Cupid's Nasty Arrows</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is about taking lovers. While viewers often comment upon it as reflecting a lone male with a pile of used females, the work is not actually gender specific. The figures are one in the same, as they are all, literally, cut from the same cloth. The cloth being my own used bedsheets, worn to the point to fraying. The lone figure is keeping the faith, keeping hope, with love (hearts) for eyes. The work is displayed right on the floor, as polite society "looks down" upon taking lovers. The work will become a dirtier affair as time passes, collecting the detritus left by others, from the floors on which it is displayed. Without realizing it, the viewer has contributed to making the piece considerably less "clean" than the freshly laundered bedsheets it was made from. Viewers also fail to differentiate between the figures in the pile and the lone figure. I will find that they have tossed the lone figure, with hearts for eyes, into the larger pile of blankly staring figures. Ah...some are careless with hearts indeed...</image:caption>

      <image:title>Alphabet: A Love Story - Alphabet: A Love Story (detail)</image:title>
<image:caption>This is an obituary, written as a riddle, for a grand love story for which no one understood nor witnessed the actual point at which it ended. It simply passed. The text for this love story "obituary" ran for 7 days as a published Notice in the Eau Claire Leader Telegram. Out of reverence for real obituaries, my Notice was not allowed to be published in the actual Obituary section of the newspaper. Every day, for the full week, I bought the newspaper, circled the Notice in red and framed it, in commemoration. To tell the tale, I had dead letters and my own experience with letter writing, love and a puzzling end in mind. Dead letters are actual pieces of mail that are stranded at the Post Office, largely the result of changes of address that go unremarked between the persons corresponding. The physicality, thoughtfulness and level of anticipation present in a handwritten letter is interesting to me. To lose a hand written love letter, for it to become a "dead" letter, is incredibly poignant. Being I was not allowed to look at the post office's collection of dead letters, I could only imagine the alphabet contained within these intangible items and I wrote my obituary as a riddle of lost letters, of lost love, lost touch.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One does not need a marriage license to be monogamous or Faithful, but in truth, a Treatise might be useful to help clear up any gray areas. I wrote such a Treatise, to cover confusing occurrences while in a relationship, such as encountering kissing, magnets and falling down, among other things. The "Treatise Concerning the Nature of Faithfulness" is contained within a tiny, altered book, that I can wear around my neck in the manner of a miniature Medieval Devotional text. To see the book, viewers would have to make a personal request and I would physically transfer the book to their neck or allow them to open and read the book while I wore it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I could not be present for this exhibit, and so in lieu of my physical presence, I wanted to create some sort of physical interaction with the viewer by proxy. I cocooned the book into the wall and spilled the entire body of text onto the floor, walls and windows of the Gallery space. Viewers would have to violate the text by walking on it, if they were curious enough to try to get to the tiny book. They would then be faced with the dilemma of plucking the book out of the wall and opening it to read or simply standing there after getting a closer look and still having to walk back over the text to get out. I liked the idea of implicating the viewer in actual physical, text regarding Faithfulness, for in choosing to be Faithful or not, we have indeed, often chosen to interact with a stranger out of desire aroused by curiosity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While not traditionally religious, I do regard religious tradition and ritual with respect and curiosity. I wondered about the psychological benefits of confessing one's sins and so I compiled a list of my "sins". My list was 237 sins long, at the time of creating this piece and includes sins of omission, guilty thoughts, dirty imaginings, actual wrong doings or just things that gave me a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I laid out the entire text, with causes of great guilt repeated several times over, on the shape/size of this family heirloom blouse which is too small for me. I embroidered every night in penance for my wrong doings and in hopes of a fresh start. I am rather dismayed to discover that I still commit some of the sins, despite ridding myself of them on this blouse.</image:caption>

      <image:title>String of Sins - Sins for Strings</image:title>
<image:caption>After completing the blouse, I attempted to write a piece of music for my sins. Using the text in the order in which it had been applied to the blouse, I dropped all letters, aside from the musical notes (A,B,C,D, E, F, G), leaving word spacing and punctuation intact. I applied a system to the groupings and patterns remaining. I proceeded to write the music on manuscript paper. I played it on my flute. It was very ugly music, sinful even, for its bastardization of what most would commonly appreciate as music. It was exactly what I had hoped for. I posted notices at the local University requesting a male Cello player, willing to play an ugly composition, while preferably shirtless, for a negotiable fee. No one responded. I toned it down a bit and simply called around asking if anyone would care to play and record an experiment for me, for the joy of collaboration with full credit on any future exhibition opportunities going to them. Still no takers when I explained how I had arrived at my choice of song. I finally found success with an eclectic band, The Painted Saints, until the highly experimental band moved to Minneapolis and chose to focus on better paying gigs. Our collaboration ended, but I did get a free CD of the band's music. My own song was never fully realized. As with some of my other projects, a strange beauty or bit of humor comes from an earnest failure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I designed and hand inked this image and converted it into a photo silkscreen. I then pulled the prints in a limited run/edition of 60, onto basic white, male and female underpants, T-shirts and camisoles. Each garment has a retail tag attached to it, on which the number in the edition is listed, along with the size and price of the garment. The fundamental underpinnings of a modern way of life, based in a monetary exchange of objects of quasi value as opposed to the Daoist idea of "The Way" are primary to this work. Viewers truly can purchase a garment for only $25, and wear it everyday as a testament to their underlying belief in "The Way".</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Cheater Caressing, condoms, fingers, fluids, fondling, fucking, holes, orifices, skin, stroking, sucking, touching The vast expanse of pleasure to be found in skin to skin contact is a private world for lovers to be lost within. However, when a lover strays, they become a cheater. The partner left violated imagines the lover with others, skin to skin, and all of the pleasure previously contained within their private orb suddenly becomes a shameful series of actions carried out with others. Nameless others become an unbearable crowd of faceless individuals, their cries of pleasure imagined, are deafening and heartbreaking. Their fingertips become imprinted in invisible patterns upon the lover's flesh, in these monstrous violations of love. The Cheater takes and then leaves these others, carrying within himself an inflated sense of lustful and violent pride, as if he were counting coup, while women rise and fall above and below him. The Cheater transforms the lovers' private work of pleasure into a monstrous series of acts to mark his territory and lay claim to a series of random holes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The gallery installation of "Cheater" began with mapping out the constellation of "fingerprints" on the gallery ceiling with tape and string to mark the position of eye hooks. The measurements for spacing and heights were determined in my basement studio with a makeshift ceiling of suspended hockey sticks. Length of string drops were then adjusted in the gallery, to accommodate the height of the gallery ceiling vs. my basement mock up of the installation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Cheater - Cheater (work in progress-drawings)</image:title>
<image:caption>After studying common fingerprint designs, I stylized my 3 favorites and combined them, in varying degrees, with imagery of female anatomy. I then created actual sized pencil drawings on newsprint, for the 2 sizes of circles I wished to use as my final sizes. Drawings were inked in with magic marker to determine line widths. My initial attempts to sculpt the fingerprint designs in clay did not produce lines delicate enough for my taste. I decided that I would need to transfer and then carve the drawings into wax and make molds from the carvings. Carbon and powdered graphite transfers did not work well due to the repelling nature of the wax surfaces. I finally taped the marker drawings to the cooled blocks of wax (made by pouring melted wax into frames the size of my circles) to trace over the marker drawings with a pointed stylus. This worked well as it created thin lines in the wax that acted as carving guides.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The wax carvings were cast in plaster. The two sizes used are shown. In the bottom left, are fragments of the mold I attempted to make from my clay carving/sculpture. The cast was too fragile and the release was poor, resulting in a broken mold. I was glad to have switched to wax for the carvings, but was curious to see how the lines would have held up in clay, so I cast the clay in plaster for experiment's sake.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Waiting - Waiting</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is comprised of over 1,100 cast sugar letters, the entire text of an actual poem, broken down by number of times each letter of the alphabet appeared. Corresponding letters were cast to match the actual text of the poem. In the end, the words of the poem no longer mattered...only the activity of creating words, letters, to fill the time, while waiting to join a loved one who had passed. I wanted my process to mimic the poem's sadness and futility of labor and language. The sugar casting is done using a Day of the Dead sugar skull recipe, for on that day, the living are thought to communicate freely with departed souls. I hoped that the recipe could conjure up some of the magic of this day. The words "I am Ready" are invented text, not found in the poem. They utilize the negative space of the floor with loose, sprinkled sugar. This fragile portion of the piece was most vulnerable to visitors. In the spaces in between, the meaning of the poem is revealed, much as life reveals itself in the quiet spaces between our everyday busyness. I wanted the piece to work without the knowledge of the poem, as well. Once words are done away with, we are left receptive and open to change. We are ready. I am ready.</image:caption>

<image:title>Waiting - Waiting (with audience wear and tear)</image:title>
<image:caption>Visitors often approach work in unusual materials, displayed on the floor, with little or no regard, much to my curiosity and sometimes dismay. During this exhibition visitors rearranged components of the piece weekly, spelling their names, random words and even running over the loose sugar with a children's stroller. Some visitors attempted to resurrect the scattered letters and I would come in to find the pile higher and tighter in arrangement. When the piece was displayed in a different exhibition/location, I found evidence of one of the letters having been sucked on/partially eaten.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Prayer 2: Service - PRAYER 2: SERVICE (WORK IN PROGRESS)</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece was created specifically for and gifted to Christ Church Cathedral, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, as part of my year long Residency award there (October 2016 through November 2017). The work got very large and required power tools and so, it had to move out of my studio space at the church to complete. It is shown here, in progress, in the shed that was ultimately remodeled after the residency and turned into what is now my home studio. The work began, with an examination of variations on the word “service” (participating in a church service; ways one can be of service; how one can be serviced; to be servile or in servitude). Essentially, the word broke down to waiting or wanting someone to decide that you are useful to them or that they are useful to you and acting upon it. I carefully observed and even participated in some of the many ways that the Christ Church Cathedral congregation practices “service”. I was very moved by the breadth of their service to others. I pinpointed my thoughts about service to my experience volunteering with one of the Cathedral groups, to prepare, serve and clean up the lunch meal at the Community Table in Eau Claire, for an anticipated 100 community members in need. The serving trays and assorted utensils adorning the piece are in homage to the memory of this experience of service. I was very touched to find “service” at the heart of this Church and wanted to make this piece specifically for them, as the piece to give them for their collection at the end of my residency.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Prayer 2: Service - PRAYER 2: SERVICE (PREPARED FOR TRANSPORT)</image:title>
<image:caption>Transporting this piece from Elk Mound to Eau Claire, for the exhibition, required boat seat cushions, life jackets, plenty of duct tape and of course, a trailer and a truck.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Prayer 2: Service - PRAYER 2: SERVICE (EXHIBITION VIEW)</image:title>
<image:caption>The finished piece ultimately lays on the floor of the Great Hall at the Christ Church Cathedral, waiting to be uplifted and in constant reminder of "service". There is an impossibility of ever serving enough, of the work ever being completed so as to have helped every one in need, to ever be worthy of rising as one did in the legendary biblical story. I find a poignant beauty in imagining this impossible task or in even trying.</image:caption>

Each letter of the poem is cast individually out of sugar, using a Day of the Dead sugar skull recipe. The words “I am Ready” are the negative images of the letters, created with loose sugar. The piece was made during a collaboration with Norma and serves to facilitate communication with her deceased husband. Normas passed before the collaboration was publicly presented and so the piece serves as her memorial, as well.</image:caption>

Sins for Strings (not pictured) utilizes all of the embroidered sin text and drops out the non-musical letters (h-z). I assigned a system to the remaining letters (a-g) and their naturally occurring groupings from the original text. I uniformly applied the devised system to write music (with the notes and groupings corresponding to letters and spaces from the text, in their original order).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cupid’s Nasty Arrows is about taking lovers. It is a grouping of hand sewn, doll like figures made out of a set of my worn bed sheets. Viewers often comment upon it as reflecting a lone male with a pile of used females, but the figures are not gender specific. The piece was intended to reflect one in the same, thus all were cut from the same cloth. The lone figure contains a bit of hope as it is unsullied as of yet, with love (hearts) for eyes. It is displayed on the floor, as polite society “looks down” on taking lovers. The work will become a dirtier affair as time passes, collecting the detritus left over by others, from the floors on which it is displayed. Without realizing, the viewer has contributed to making the piece considerably less clean than the freshly washed, but well used, bed sheets it was made from.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Alphabet: A Love Story is an invented text, in riddle form, published in a paid ad in the Eau Claire Leader Telegram. The ad ran for 7 days. Each day, the newspaper was purchased, the ad circled and cut out, and then framed. The newspaper would not allow the ad to be published in the Obituary section, as originally requested. I took odd calls from it and kept a small call log of responses to the notices. The notice marks an admitted ending to a long term love affair.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gallery - Treatise Concerning the Nature of Faithfulness</image:title>
<image:caption>Treatise Concerning the Nature of Faithfulness is a text that I wrote, somewhat serious and rather humorous, about being able to tell the degree of faithfulness of a love partner. The text was fashioned after my divorce decree, legal lingo, romantic touchstones, and songs by The Cure. It gives specific instruction on what to do with the “Faithful” or the “Unfaithful”. It is worn around my neck as a tiny, devotional book. Viewers must ask me to see it when I wear it for exhibition. I must remove it, and in a gesture of intimacy and trust, pass it to them to read. When my presence was not possible, I cocooned the book in a hollow, in a box, in the gallery wall. Viewers could reach inside to remove and read it. But, to get to the book, they had to walk “through” the entire text of the treatise, which was spilled out onto the floor, windows and wall of the gallery. With the intimacy of communication and physically passing the book from me to the viewer gone, I wanted to cause the viewer discomfort for viewing the treatise voyeuristically. The piece was painted over at the end of the exhibition, the hole in the wall patched.</image:caption>

The data was collected through actual observations in pre-specified locations as determined by the Data Collection Books and the criteria for observation that they each contain. A theatre performer (Aaron Zook) and I spied on people and noted their interactions into the books for 9 months. The 17 Data Collection Books are modeled after practice script books that Aaron used in his profession. The raw observation data was then compiled and mathematically ranked based upon frequency of occurrence. The top 10 frequently occurring behaviors of the separated Male and Female data was turned into a series of “facts” and generalized statements which make up the Portrait: He and Portrait: She. The portraits provide the viewer with a way to recognize when Love potentially walks into their life. The written summary of the compiled data makes up the Official Reporting of Findings. Research Phase I. Physical Manifestations of Love Affliction: As Documented Through an Analysis of Nonverbal Symptomatic Communication. I present the written report, while dressed as an official Scientist, in a very monotone, 12 ½ minute live performance. For times when I am unable to perform live, the performance is shown on a DVD. The final installation is the raw data in a glass case, the Portraits hung up, a red 78rpm record of “Love Walked In” by George and Ira Gershwin, a Proximity Approximation Device, the Official Report of Findings out for viewers to read, and the DVD playing or myself performing live.</image:caption>
